Who needs the CRUE

EU, EEA and Swiss citizens (and their EU family members) who stay in Portugal for more than three months. It proves your right of residence and is often asked for by employers, banks and public services.

What you'll typically bring

Your ID or passport, NIF, proof of address and proof that you work, study or have enough means. Some councils also ask for a certificate from the local parish (junta de freguesia).

After the CRUE

With the certificate you can more easily get your NISS, register with the health service and, after five years, apply for permanent residence.

Living in Spain? The equivalent is the NIE Green certificate.
