1What it is

The Non-Habitual Resident (NHR) regime gave new residents reduced tax on certain income for ten years. It closed to most new applicants from 2024, but people already registered keep their benefits for the rest of their ten-year period, and some transitional cases may still apply. We help NHR holders keep their status in order and check whether a transitional rule applies to you.

2Who needs it

  • People already registered as NHR
  • People who may qualify under the transitional rules
  • NHR holders who need their annual tax return filed correctly

3Documents usually required

We confirm the exact list for your situation with your quote. You can upload documents with your request.

5Good to know

The situation today

The original NHR regime stopped accepting most new applicants from 2024. People already registered keep their status for the remaining years of their ten-year period, and a small number of transitional cases could still apply.

If you already have NHR

Your benefits depend on filing your IRS tax return correctly each year, including foreign income. Mistakes can cost you part of the benefit.

If you are new to Portugal

The replacement regime is IFICI, often called NHR 2.0. It is aimed at specific professions and activities, with its own deadlines.

Moving to Spain instead? Compare with the Beckham Law.

6Frequently asked questions

Can I still apply for NHR?

Only in limited transitional cases. Most new residents should look at the IFICI regime (NHR 2.0) instead. We check which applies to you.
